BUFFALO NEWS
09/02/09
After a disappointing end to the 08-09 season that saw the Sabres fall just short of the playoffs for the second consecutive year General Manager Guy wasted no time jumping in to action. With 6 trades on the books for the summer Guy says he’s now ready to focus on preparing his team for the coming season.

“We were very disappointed in our performance in our own zone last season and that had to be addressed.” The Sabres held the third worst goals against in the Eastern Conference ahead of Washington and Ottawa. Joining the Buffalo blueline will be veteran defensemen Mattias Ohlund and Brendan Witt as well as rookie Mark Stuart. “We’re very excited to see what these guys can do. Chris (Phillips) and Wade (Redden) will be missed but I think the change is something we all needed.”

The offense will look very familiar to Sabres fans this season with 9 of last years forwards returning. Leaving the forward corps are wingers Wojtek Wolski, Thomas Holmstrom and 5 year Sabre veteran Martin Erat. They will be replaced by veteran winger Teemu Selanne, sophomore Devin Setoguchi and rookie Kris Versteeg. Also expected to don the blue and gold for parts of season are rookies Troy Brouwer and Brian Boyle. The four youngsters were essential parts of the Portland Pirates playoff run which saw defeat in the eastern conference finals.

The Sabres prospect pool saw some growth this offseason as well. Thomas McCollum, Matt Gilroy, Ben Maxwell, Tim Kennedy and Ryan Jones were all acquired by the Sabres this off season. “We’re really excited about the future of this club. Not only are we in a position to make an impact this season in our pursuit for the cup but we have some great youth coming through the system. We expect these players to make impacts with the big club as soon as the 2010-2011 season.”

You have two great fowards in Jagr and Thornton who should put up a ton of points and Ekman has some great ratings for this year (74 SC) so he'll score a good deal of goals playing with those 2. You need a good 2nd line centers because Calder is a bit low for a 2nd line spot. Jovo and Lukowich is a great top pairing because Jovo can rack up the points and Lukowich can hold the fort defensively (77 DF I think). Lalime as a starter is above average as well. If you round out your 2nd line with some decent fowards and get a few good top 4 defensemen for your D I can't see why you wouldn't make the playoffs.

I think you will need to get a different player than Ekman for your starting line-up. Although his ratings are good I don't thin he will do well. But maybe playing with Jagr and Thornton will get him points.

If you have 2 great players playing with a decent player he'll still rack up the points. With those 2 Ekman could easily get 70-80 points next season.

Your defence is weak, goaltending is questionable
