Maple Leafs Top 20 Prospect
Dave Schneizer, TSN Staff
05/01/06 The Maple Leafs are maybe not the powerhouse team they used to be in the past, but they can certainly be considered to have one of the best pool of prospect in the entire league.
Since the departure of the NHL (1917-2004) and the arrival of the new ''best league in the world'', EHSL, Toronto has crumbled at the bottom of the standing, playing mediocre hockey with less than impressive players. Maple Leafs fan had find some comfort though as the terrible 2004-05 season had place their favorite team a top contender for the ''Sidney Crosby Lottery'', which we know now, they have won.
Sidney Crosby is easily the most talented and hyped prospect that have played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) since Mario Lemieux. The 5'11, 190 pounds center have demonstrate his awesome skill, talent and vision in the last two years with the Rimouski Oceanics with 120 goals and 293 points in only 121 games. This year, Number 87 is almost on the pace of reaching the record of Mario Lemieux for most points in a single season(282 points in 70 games), with 123 points in only 32 games. Always compare to the former Edmonton Oilers Wayne Gretzky, Sidney Crosby will be, without any doubt, the face of the franchise for the next 20 years.
Crosby isn't the only talented prospect in the organisation though. The Maple Leafs is considered of having one of the best defensemans prospects around the league, with talented young man like Ryan Suter, Brent Seabrook, Kris Russell, Kyle Wharton, Brett Carson and so on. They also have a great depth in net, as they have Marc-Andre Fleury, who have take the job between the pipes since the departure of Ed Belfour, Julien Ellis-Plante (who's playing with Shawinigan in the QJMHL), James Howard and Rejean Beauchemin (Both playing with the Marlies).
Three players from the 2005 draft are up in the top 10. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5 JANUARY 2006
Top 20 prospect in the Maple Leafs organization
1- Sidney Crosby, C 1st Round; 1st Overall in 2005, 5’11, 190 lbs, 18 years old
Crosby is considered to be the next big star in the EHSL. A generational player with pure speed, raw skills and incredible playmaking talent. Sidney Crosby have lot of determination, he's never intimidate and he never stop working. He can also handle pressure quite easily. He do almost everything perfectly, with skills, effort and passion.
Future: Best player in the world, franchise forward Grade: 10,0 C
2- Marc-Andre Fleury, G 1st Round; 1st Overall in 2003, 6’2, 172 lbs, 21 years old
Marc-Andre Fleury is the type of goaltender you want to build your team around. He got an excellent technique and he's already one of the quickness goaltender in the world. Fleury is definitely the guy you want between the pipes when an important game is on the line.
Future: Franchise goaltender Grade: 8,5 B
3- Ryan Suter, D 1st round; 7th overall in 2003, 6'1, 188 lbs, 20 years old
Ryan Suter is an incredible, all-around defenseman. He can shot, deke, make excellent passes and throw hits. He has great speed and he have a sixth sense to anticipate and read plays; that's his main quality.
Future: First pairing defenseman Grade: 8,5 A
4- Brent Seabrook, D 1st round; 14th overall in 2003, 6'3, 220 lbs, 20 years old
Seabrook his a two-way defenseman with some great skills. He have a heavy shots and he make excellent decisions and passes under pressure and he can throw some big hits. He's a natural leader, a future captain in the big leagues. He need to improve his skating to perform to his full potential.
Future: First pairing defenseman Grade: 7,5 B
5- Igor Grigorenko, RW 2nd round; 62th overall in 2001, 5'10, 180 lbs, 22 years old
Grigorenko his a gifted forward with raw skills and speeds. He's creative with the puck and can combine great dekes at high speeds. Grigorenko his an offensive mind players. Griorenko need to improve his physical play. Hopefully, he should have fully recovery from a car accident in 2004.
Future: Scoring line winger Grade: 8,5 C
6- Paul Stastny, C 2nd round; 32th overall in 2005, 6'0, 200 lbs, 20 years old
Paul Stastny his the son of the former NHL superstars Peter Stastny, and actually general manager of the Toronto Marlies. Paul play the same style as his father, using his great playmaking talent, his speed and his body to find open space. He have a great vision of the game and an excellent work ethic.
Future: Scoring line Center Grade: 7,5 B
7- James Howard, G 2nd round; 63th overall in 2003, 6'1, 204 lbs, 20 years old
This US born goaltender has the potential to become the next trust goaltender in international competition. Howard is a big goaltender with poise, who play with confidence and focus. He isn't afraid of using his stick, since he's a good puck handler. He have some great reflexes and he's a natural talent. He needs to improve his rebound control and he need to protect more effectively the upper part of the net.
Future: Starting goaltender Grade: 7,5 B
8- Julien Ellis-Plante, G 6th round; 189th overall in 2004, 6'0, 177 lbs, 19 years old
Ellis-Plante his another QJMHL goaltender who pay an efficient butterfly style. He's not a big goaltender, but he's quick and it's very difficult to score low on him. He's a calm goaltender, who play intensely. Have to learn to control his rebound more efficiently.
Future: Starting goaltender Grade: 7,0 C
9- Fredrik Sjostrom, RW 1st round; 11th overall in 2001, 6'0, 198 lbs, 22 years old
Sjostrom as all the skills to become an impact player in this league. Unfortunately, he still hasn't been able to gather all together. He's got lot of skills and he isn't afraid of using his body. He's got a good work ethic and a good attitude and that should help him in his progression.
Future: Scoring line forward grade: 7,0 B
10- Kris Russell, D 3rd round; 62th overall in 2005, 5'9, 160 lbs, 18 years old
Kris Russell is an extremely talented defenseman with some great anticipation. He can control a game on his own and he's a very intense player. He would have been considered a bluechip defenseman is it wasn't of his small height (5'9). Russell is a hit or miss, but he could become a power play quarterback in the new EHSL.
Future: Second line pairing Grade: 6,5 C
11- Kyle Wharton, D 2nd round; 59th overall in 2004, 6'2, 190 lbs, 19 years old
Wharton is a defenseman with lot of offensive attribute. He has good speed and isn't afraid of contacts. He sometime lack of intensity. This year, he was invited to the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) all-star.
Future: Third pairing defenseman Grade: 6,5 B
12- Brett Carson, D 4th round; 109th overall in 2004, 6'4, 220 lbs, 20 years old
Brett Carson is limited offensive defenseman with some speeds and grit. He play a very physical game and he almost never make a bad play in the defensive zone, plus he's an excellent passer.
Future: Third pairing defenseman Grade: 7,0 C
13- Tuomas Pihlman, LW 2nd round; 48th overall in 2001, 6'3, 210 lbs, 23 years old
Tuomas Pihlman was a highly promise kids that hasn't live up to the expectation. He's a power forward with some natural abilities. He also skate well for his seize. He isn't the offensive machine some think off and will probably finish as a grinder in the EHSL.
Future: Third or fourth line winger Grade: 5,5 B
14- Cody Franson, D 5th round; 112th overall in 2005, 6'4, 205 lbs, 18 years old
Cody Franson as impress everyone since the start of the season. In 2004-05, Franson scores 2 goals and produce 13 points in 60 games. This year, he notch 9 goals and produce 31 points in 40 games. Having the height and the weight to perform in the big league, Cody need time to mature and work on his skills, before graduating into the big league.
Future: Third pairing defenseman Grade: 6,0 C
15- Rejean Beauchemin, G 6th round; 191th overall in 2003, 6'1, 193 lbs, 20 years old
Beauchemin has been disappointing since the start of year, working his way up and down from the American Hockey League (AHL) to the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). He have the ability to become an EHSL goaltender but need to work on his constancy. Beauchemin his a quick and atletic goaltender with a good ethic.
Future: Backup goaltender Grade: 7,0 C
16- Cody Bass, C 4th round; 105th overall in 2005, 6'0, 191 lbs, 19 years old
Cody Bass is a hard working man who his builted in the mold of Kris Draper. Cody he's a defensive specialist with grit and leadership. He don't have any offensive talent, so he won't score more than 10 goals a year in the big league. He have some skating ability though.
Future: Third or fourth line center Grade: 6,5 B
17- Perttu Lindgren, C 5th round; 124th overall in 2005, 6'0, 180 lbs, 18 years old
Lindgren has the potential to become a scoring forward in the EHSL. He has the skills, the finesse, the hands and he can do some good passes. Perttu Lindgren style of play isn't really adapt to the north american style of play and he will have to adapt himself if he want to play in the EHSL.
Future: Scoring line winger Grade: 7,0 D
18- David Booth, LW 2nd round; 53th overall in 2004, 6'1, 217 lbs, 21 years old
Booth his a power forward player. He use his strength to take advantage of his opponent. He's not a great skater, nor a good playmaker, but he have some offensive ability and he's responsible in his own zone. Probably don't have the talent to become an efficient scoring power forward in the big league.
Future: Fourth line winger Grade: 6,5 C
19- Roman Tesliuk, D 2nd round; 44 overall in 2004, 6'1, 205 lbs, 19 years old
Roman Tesliuk is one of the most disappointing player from the 2004 draft. Select in the 2nd round, Tesliuk hasn't yet show his offensive upside. He's not the constant, great playmaker and powerplay quarterback the Maple Leafs have draft.
Future: Third pairing defenseman Grade: 6,0 C
20- Tomas Malec, D 3rd round, 64th overall in 2001, 6'2, 193 lbs, 23 years old
Tomas Malec hasn't really lived up to his potential. He have excellent skating and playmaking abilities, but wasn't able to gather all together. He still have the potential to become an EHSL'er some day though.
Future: Minor league defenseman Grade: None ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Strenghts
1. Goalie Depth/World Class Goalies 2. Defenseman Depth/World Class Defensemans 3. Center Depth/World Class Centers 4. Leadership
Weaknesses
1. Lack of high potential wingers 2. Lack of powerforwards

Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury Out With a Groin Injury
Dave Schneizer, TSN Staff
16/01/06 In the past weeks, the whole journalistic crew covering the Maple Leafs actions had shown some concern about the use of goaltender Marc-André Fleury. Having played all 24 games of his team, jounalist thought he was ''over used''. Seems we were right ...
A tile have fall on the head of the Maple Leafs organisation as their superstar goaltender Marc-André Fleury had injured is groin in the middle of the third period, in the matchup between the Leafs and the Minnesota Wilds. After making a brilliant pad save over left winger Martin Gelinas, he (Gelinas) never slow down and run directly on Fleury. Gelinas was ejected from the game, but after revewing the play, the EHSL and the discipline committee havn't seen reprehensive act worth a suspension. Team doctor Noah Forman comment the injury: '' The mixture of the fast movement and the hit probably cause the injury. Mr. Fleury will be out of the rink for about one month, but we can always hope for a fast recovery''
Coach Claude Julien was very upset at the press conference after the game. Some journalist was questionning his decision to keep Marc-Andre Fleury in the lineup night after night: '' Every night, we work like crazy to gain victory [...] My job is to put the best available players on the ice, and Marc-André Fleury was my best goaltender available. Mathieu Chouinard will now have the chance to prove himself, and I know he his able to do the work.''
Journalists were unable to talk to Marc-Andre Fleury for reason out of our control, as we was carried to hospital for further test.
Now that Fleury is out of the lineup, Mathieu Chouinard, a former 1st round pick, will be the starter for the next couples of games. The Maple Leafs recall goaltender James Howard from the Marlies, as he was having a great season start, with a 12-5-1 record, 2.21 goal average, and 918. save percentage.

Team Captain Eric Daze is Exchange to the New Jersey Devils
Dave Schneizer, TSN Staff
17/01/06 General Manager Mathieu Joyal have decided to exchange his captain, a third and fourth round pick in the next entry draft for Left Winger and high regard prospect Tomas Fleischmann, defenseman Marc-Andre Gragnani and Los Angeles 2nd round pick in the 2006 entry draft (previously acquired by New Jersey general manager Dave Housman)
Journalists around the Maple Leafs organization, including myself, remain very septic about this move by the general manager. Without a doubt, the organization receive in this trade two tremendous prospect having great years and a solid round pick, but this move also mean that the Maple Leafs organization have give up on their quest to a playoff spot. I would have prefer seeing a move like that at the trade deadline if the Maple Leafs were too far from the 8th spot in the east.
In a second press conference organize by the Maple Leafs organization in two days, general manager Mathieu Joyal, accompanied by his assistant Serge Savard, coach Claude Julien and president Cliff Fletcher, comment the trades: '' As we are building for the future, Tomas Fleischmann and Marc-Andre Gragnani are fantastic acquisition for our team. Obviously, we are sad to lose such a great man and captain in Eric Daze, but it was a decision I have decided to made. He will have the chance to play with a great offensive team. ''
Eric Daze was cruising this year in the EHSL even with belows average linemate. He had notch 12 goals and had collected 9 assists in 24 games. Here again, just like in the Marc-Andre Fleury situation yesterday, Eric Daze haven't comment yet on the trade, as he was directly sent in New York; his new team playing the Islanders tomorrow night.
As for the new acquisitions, Tomas Fleischmann was having a good season with the Albany River Rats, as he scored 10 goals and 29 points in only 28 games. Mr.Joyal have announced that Fleischmann will automatically report himself to the Marlies in the AHL.
For Marc-Andre Gragnani, he will remain with his junior club, the Prince Edward Island Rocket, as he's having an incredible year, with 9 goals and 48 points in only 37 games.
Finally, coach Claude Julien hasn't decided yet which player will wear the ''C'' on his jersey for the rest of the year. He only say that: '' the team will decide which players will be next captain in the next days. ''

Young Russian and Superstar Defenseman Andrei Markov is the 19th Captain in Maple Leafs History
Dave Schneizer, TSN Staff
19/01/06 A private reunion between coaching staff and team members take place after the matchup between the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and the Toronto Maple Leafs to decided which players would be the next team captain. After almost two hours of debate between team members, the Maple Leafs crew have decided to elect Russian Andrei Markov, succeeding to Eric Daze who had been exchanged to the New Jersey devils a couple of days ago.
The mood after the reunion wasn't very high as it seem that lot of controversy east left from this meeting. From what I have learned, almost a quarter of the team were in list become next team captain, as right winger Tomas Holmstrom, Center Greg Johnson, defenseman Willie Mitchell but mostly center Radek Bonk, who's having an incredible season this year in the EHSL, were mention.
The debate continued outside the conference room as some players comment the nomination '' I respect Andrei as a player and a human being, but i don't think he have the charisma and the leadership to become a good captain in this organization'' says veteran Jassen Cullimore. Tough defenseman Ivan Majesky add to the controversy, saying we was ''disappointed'' that a leader like Radek Bonk wasn't choose.
Radek Bonk can comfort himself, as he was name assistant captain. A consolation he didn't really appreciate. He made a quick comment after the reunion, saying: '' Markov is a marvelous talent with lots of abilities, but he don't have any qualification to be a team captain. Come on, I found out a week ago that this guy was able to talk! ''
Overachieving since the start of the season, we will see if the recent lost of Eric Daze and Marc-Andre Fleury, and today controversy will make the Leafs fall in the standings, as they are now in 13th place, only 6 points from a provisional playoff spot.

Norris Winner Scott Niedermayer a Toronto Maple Leafs
Dave Schneizer, TSN Staff
05/08/06 No one covering the activities of our belove Toronto Maple Leafs could have found out that this year offseason would be one of the most thrilling and exciting of the past decade. After acquiring defenseman Francis Bouillon from the Ottawa Senators, Toronto general manager Mathieu Joyal made a splash by trading left winger Brad May, defenseman Ivan Majesky and a first round pick for young netminder Alex Auld. Obviously, only Joyal knew it wasn't over.
The press conference took place in the Air Canada Center at 14:00PM today. Surrounded by newly acquired Scott Niedermayer at his left and president Cliff Fletcher at his right, general manager Mathieu Joyal was very happy about the acquisition:'' The organisation and I are very confident that this acquisition will help our team making the playoff and even go further. Scott is one of the best 2-way defenseman in this league and we're thrill to have him in our team. We gave a promising asset in Ryan Suter and a young winger with good potential in Andreas Nodl, but we felt it was a great move for the direction we want to take as a team.''
Looking at his new team, Niedermayer said being confident to see the Maple Leafs doing great this year and even surprise: '' This team have load of potential in each position, from Sidney Crosby to Brent Seabrook, this team has the potential to become a force in this league and I'm excited to be part of it.'' He also talk about the group of defenseman:'' Even though the Maple Leafs is a very young team, the defensive core have a lot of experience. We will need to help our young goaltenders and set out our forwards fastly."
Was this move the point of the iceberg or does general manager Mathieu Joyal haven't finished yet?: '' I am still looking to add one or two wingers into our starting formation. However, I would be confident starting this year with these players.''
Finally, Scott Niedermayer was named assistant captain with Tomas Holmstrom. Defenseman Andrei Markov remained the captain.

2006-07 Maple Leafs Season Preview
Dave Schneizer, TSN Staff
30/10/06 On the verge on a new exciting EHSL season, the Maple Leafs sure look a lot different than last year. After the acquisition of all-star defenseman Scott Niedermayer and the trade of young phenom Sidney Crosby, does this team will finally earn a playoff spot?
Even though the Vancouver Canucks won the Stanley Cup, defeating the Pittsburgh in four straight games, the show was in Toronto this offseason. The rebuilding concession took a new curve this offseason, a dangerous one, by cutting the corners to get faster to a playoff spot.
This agitating offseason start slowly by the acquisition of 5'8 gritty defenseman Francis Bouillon of the Ottawa Senators for a third round pick. After trading european goaltender Thomas Greiss for a second pick, the real show started by the acquisition of young goaltender Alex Auld of the Florida Panthers, who will share the duty with Marc-Andre Fleury this year. Gaving a first round pick, defenseman Ivan Majesky and veteran Brad May in this trade, the Maple Leafs received a third pick, which they used to select young powerforward Oskar Osala.
The second big trade of the Maple Leafs offseason went afterwards, when the Leafs trade young defenseman Ryan Suter with late bloomer Andreas Nodl for all-around defenseman Scott Niedermayer. The 33 years old veteran will bring stability to the defensive squad while helping the kids in their development.
While we thought the Niedermayer trade was a big one, we never estimate that general manager Mathieu Joyal was ready to give up young phenom Sidney Crosby and next year first round pick to have a better chance to access to the playoffs. Well, he did, and receive Jason Spezza, Ales Hemsky, Chuck Kobasew and Robert Nilsson, four young forwards in the process.
While analyst have no doubt that these offseason moves will help the Maple Leafs accesing to the playoffs this year, a lot of us are doubting that these trades, especially the Crosby trade, will help the Leafs in the future. If results arn't coming soon enough, all these activities in this offseason could put Joyal in a lot of trouble in the future.

Maple Leafs Top 20 Prospect: 2006-07 Edition
Dave Schneizer, TSN Staff
30/10/06 With all these changes in past couple of months in the Maple Leafs organization, this year portrait look a lot different.
Last year performance by the Maple Leafs weren't impressive at all and for results, they still managed to finish last in the conference. While these results were disapointing, they've been rewarded by another high pick in this year draft, the third overall, and with it, they grabbed young talent Nicklas Backstrom.
Backstrom was born in Galve, Sweden, a city of about 100 000 persons. Nicklas was raised in a family of hockey players. His father, Anders, is a well known player who played 10 seasons with the Brynäs IF and his brother, Kristoffer, play in the second tier of the Sweden elite system with the Hammarby IF. At 18 years of age, Nicklas was known as one of the most talented prospect to come out of Sweden in more than a decade. He also joined the Brynas IF in the Sweden Elite League and quickly became one of the most important player of his team. He received the rookie player of the year award for his brilliant display all year long. This year, he will still play for the Brynas IF, before attaining to North America in 2007.
Even with the departure of Sidney Crosby, the Toronto Maple Leafs organization can still count on a great bunch of prospects. At center, Nicklas Backstrom is leading the pack, but 2005 second round pick Paul Stastny and acquired Dave Bolland arn't that far behind, both developping very well. At left side, they can count on Robert Nilsson, who will play on the fourth line at the start of the year, Dustin Penner, who will probably see some action in the EHSL this year and Tomas Fleischmann. On the other side, Igor Grigorenko isn't the elite prospect he used to be, but he's still solid.
With the trade of Ryan Suter and the graduation of Brent Seabrook, The Leafs don't have any elite talent at defense, but they have a lot of depth, starting with last year defenseman of the year in the Western Hockey League, Kris Russell. Second round pick of last year draft Yuri Alexandrov. Cody Franson, Alex Emelin, Marc-Andre Gragnani, Staffan Kronwall and Andy Greene are all solid prospect who can believe to make the EHSL one day. At last, the goalie depth of Toronto isn't as impressive as last year, but they can still count on James Howard, who saw some action in the EHSL last year, Julien Ellis-Plante and Rejean Beauchemin.
Two players from the 2006 entry draft are up in the top 10, respectivly first and tenth. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 30 OCTOBER 2006
Top 20 prospect in the Maple Leafs organization
1- (NR) Nicklas Backstrom, C 1st Round; 4th Overall in 2006, 6'0, 190 lbs, 18 years old
An awesome talent, Backstrom have demonstrate in any level he played that he could dominate with constancy. Althought his offensive game his very impressing, he also have a great defensive game. Overall, his game has been compared to fellow Peter Forsberg of the Philadelphia Flyers.
Future: franchise forward Grade: 8,5 B
2- (5) Paul Stastny, C 2nd round; 32th overall in 2005, 6'0, 200 lbs, 21 years old
In his last year in the NCAA, Paul Stastny proved he was more than only Peter's son. In 39 games, he scored 19 goals and 34 assists for 53 points, finishing first in points with Matt Carle. This year, he will play with the Marlies to acquire some professionnal experience, and will battle for a spot with the big club as soon as next year.
Future: scoring line center Grade: 7,5 B
3- (6) Dustin Penner, LW UNDRAFTED, 6'4, 240 lbs, 24 years old
Dustin Penner came out of nowhere to become of the most touted prospect in the EHSL. As he went undrafted, the Maple Leafs gave him his chance by claiming him in the waivers. He quickly became a dominant player in his league. With his vision and his great hands along with his work ethic and his size, Penner could become a dominant power forward in the EHSL.
Future: scoring line winger Grade: 8,0 C
4- (NR) Robert Nilsson, LW 1st round; 15th overall in 2003, 5'11, 176 lbs, 21 years old
Newly acquired Robert Nilsson is in the verge to make his debut in the EHSL, as coach Julien officially put him on his fourth line to start the year. Nilsson development as a bit stagnate since his draft year. However, Nilsson is an highly skilled winger who combine skating with incredible deking abilities, which still make him a great prospect.
Future: scoring line winger Grade: 8,0 B
5- (9) James Howard, G 2nd round; 63th overall in 2003, 6'1, 204 lbs, 21 years old
James Howard development in the last year was good enough to became the backup goaltender to Marc-Andre Fleury. However, with the arrival of Alex Auld, Howard will start the year with the Marlies. Even his some goaltenders would take this demotion very badly, Howard confidence will help him to rebounce greatly. Howard have shown in could be a starter in this league in the next few years.
Future: starting goaltender Grade: 7,5 B
6- (4) Igor Grigorenko, RW 2nd round; 62th overall in 2001, 5'10, 180 lbs, 23 years old
Having recovered from a car accident in 2004, Grigorenko is still considered an important prospect form the Maple Leafs. However, having decide to stay with his russian club, the Tolyatti Lada, for the 2006-07 campaign was disappointing for the whole organization, who would have like to see him coming to North America this year. Having said that, Grigorenko is still the offensive threat he was in his draft year, and could become an important player in the Leafs organization in the next few years.
Future: scoring line winger Grade: 8,0 D
7- (7) Tomas Fleischmann, LW 2nd round; 63th overall in 2002, 6'0, 178 lbs, 22 years old
Tomas Fleischmann offensive qualities are undeniable. He play a high speed game with skill and desire, which will make him a fan favourite. He also have good playmaking abilities and a great wrist shot. However, he need to be more conscious of the defensive part of the game to become a solid EHSL player.
Future: scoring line Center Grade: 7,5 C
8- (8) Dave Bolland, C 2nd round; 32th overall in 2004, 5'11, 171 lbs, 20 years old
Dave Bolland offensive has been shown widely with the London Knights last year. With a campaign of 57 goals and 130 points in only 59 games, Bolland is ready for a new challange. This year, he will play with the Marlies in the American Hockey League. Even thought he's known for his heavy shot and above average speed, Bolland love to finish his check and can be a gritty player.
Future: scoring line forward grade: 7,0 B
9- (13) Kris Russell, D 3rd round; 62th overall in 2005, 5'9, 160 lbs, 19 years old
The small height of Kris Russell (5'9) havn't prevented Kris Russell to play an incredible campaign with the Medecine Hat Tigers and being named on Canada Junior Squad. Moreover, he earn the Bill Hunter award, giving to the top defenseman in the Western Hockey League. Despite is height, Russell is just too talented to not become a EHSL players. However, it's difficult to tell where he will stand in all this.
Future: second pairing defenseman Grade: 6,5 C
10- (NR) Yuri Alexandrov, D 2nd round; 33rd overall in 2006, 6'1, 174 lbs, 18 years old
A player with great leadership, Yuri Alexandrov is the kind of player who can elevate his play when the situation matter. Alexandrov is a great skater with great playmaking abilities and a strong shot. His lack of strenght and size should be corrected if he want to play in the big league. Overall, he's a typical two-way defenseman.
Future: second pairing defenseman grade: 7,5 B
11- (18) Cody Franson, D 5th round; 112th overall in 2005, 6'4, 205 lbs, 18 years old
Cody Franson last year production was amazing for a defenseman considered as strickly defensive. In 71 games, he scored 15 goals and earn 55 points, which is more than four time his 2004-05 total points. Being one of the most improved player of the 2005 draft, Franson is looking to continue is fast progression.
Future: second pairing defenseman Grade: 7,0 B
12- (10) Julien Ellis-Plante, G 6th round; 189th overall in 2004, 6'0, 177 lbs, 19 years old
Julien Ellis-Plante last year performance was good enough for him to be invite to the Canada junior camp. While not being taken (Justin Pogge and Devan Dubnyk were taken), Ellis-Plante have shown to a lot of septic that he could compete with the best player of his age. This year, he's looking to perform with the Marlies.
Future: starting goaltender Grade: 7,0 C
13- (12) Alexei Emelin, D 3rd round; 84th overall in 2004, 6'1, 187 lbs, 20 years old
Alexei Emelin is a big defensive defenseman, who can punish the opposition with his big body check. While he isn't an offensive threat, his good wrist shot can be good enough to score sometime in the big league. He will need to stay discipline and bulk up to be efficiant in the EHSL.
Future: second pairing defenseman grade: 7,5 B
14- (NR) Staffan Kronwall, D 9th round; 285th overall in 2002, 6'1, 180 lbs, 24 years old
Staffan Kronwall is the little brother of stud defenseman Niklas, who's playing with the New York Islanders. While he don't have the offensive tool his older brother possess, his defensive awareness and his physical play will be good enough for him to play a role in the EHSL.
Future: third pairing defenseman Grade: 6,0 B
15- (14) Marc-Andre Gragnani, D 5th round; 128th overall in 2005, 6'3, 210 lbs, 19 years old
Marc-Andre Gragnani willingness will be his strongest asset in his career. However, this isn't is only asset, as he's very smart, he possess defensive awarness and he protect the puck well. This year, he will return to his junior club, where he should dominate the league.
Future: third pairing defenseman Grade: 7,0 C
16- (NR) Andy Greene, D UNDRAFTED, 5'11, 180 lbs, 24 years old
It's still a mystery how Andy Greene never been drafted. He possess some tremendous skating abilities, while being efficient on both way of the ice. His vision and positionning allow him to be a step ahead on most plays. Greene is a year away to play in the EHSL, he still need to take confidence in a professionnal league.
Future: third pairing defenseman Grade: 6,5 B
17- (NR) Codey Burki, C 2nd round; 57th overall in 2006, 6'0, 190 lbs, 18 years old
Codey Burki 61 points campaign in a low scoring league help him elevate his confidence. No doubt Burki possess the offensive skills to become an EHSL'ers, but he has been known as a tricky player, dominating one game and playing an erased role the next one. He's the typical hit ot miss player.
Future: scoring line center Grade: 7'0 C
18- (NR) Cal Clutterbuck, RW 2nd round; 41th overall in 2006, 5'10, 196 lbs, 18 years old
A natural leader, Cal Clutterbuck is coaches favourite players. Having great work ethic, he always give all he got on the ice. Moreover, he's one of the best body checker in the Canadian Hockey League. He's the kind of agitator you want on your third or fourth line.
Future: third or fourth line winger Grade: 6,0 C
19- (NR) Oskar Osala, LW 3rd round; 65th overall in 2006, 6'4, 217 lbs, 18 years old
Oskar Osala had a slow start last year, because he needed to adjust to the North American style of play. There's no doubt that Osala possess all the skills to become a EHSL player. Having said that, he need to prove he can stay constant on a full schedule.
Future: third or fourth line winger Grade: 6,0 C
20- (19) Kyle Wharton, D 2nd round; 59th overall in 2004, 6'2, 190 lbs, 20 years old
Kyle Wharton didn't had the year expected. While having offensive tools, he didn't seems to use it often enough. On the other hand, having been trade for the second time in two years didn't help me to find his constancy. He will play with the Marlies this year.
Future: third pairing defenseman Grade: 6,5 B
Miss the Cut
(NR) Andrei Popov, RW (NR) (17) Rejean Beauchemin, G (6.5 C) (15) Tuomas Pihlman, LW (6.0 C)
Graduated
Brent Seabrook (7.5)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Strenghts
1. Center Depth/World Class Centers 2. Left Winger Depth 3. Defenseman Depth 4. Leadership
Weaknesses
1. Lack of high potential defenseman 2. Lack of defensive awarness forwards

The Maple Leafs Have Traded Their Number One Goaltender in a 9 Players Swap
Dave Schneizer, TSN Staff
06/03/07 While hopes were very high on the verge of the 2006-07 season, yesterday blockbuster trade between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the New York Rangers clearly demonstrate the frustration of the Maple Leafs organization.
In a 9 players swap, the Leafs traded goaltender Alex Auld, center Ryan Malone, defenseman Francis Bouillon, right winfer Chuck Kobasew and prospect Robert Nilsson. In exchange, the Leafs received another goaltender in Andrew Raycroft, a young and promising center in Zach Parise and two defenseman: Henrik Tallinder and Garnet Exelby.
While the majorities of expert recognize that the Maple Leafs received a great return for the players they gave, they also see their playoffs hope fading and almost vanishing by giving up four regular players in Auld, Malone, Bouillon and Kobasew.
In yesterday press conference at the Air Canada Center, general manager Mathieu Joyal explain his lastest move '' While I believe that this team is suited for better results than the one showed since the start of the year, constancy, in my opinion, has been our biggest flaw. Admiting this fact, I decided to trade some players who I think lack this constancy we're looking for. [...] Yes, I admit I give up the present for the future. However, I firmly believe that this future his as near as next year.''
Moreover, Claude Julien has already present to the medias his full alignment for friday's game against the Buffalo Sabres. While the first line stay the same, Nedved will join the second line, taking Ryan Malone position. Plekanec will join the third line, while newly acquired Zach Parise will join the fourth line. For the defensemans, Tallinder will be pair with Markov on the second unit while Exelby will play with McCarthy. In net, Andrew Raycroft will start. Coach Julien have specified that an alternation system between Raycroft and Mason will be in place: '' until one of the two prove me he deserve to be in net more often.''
At last, Fredrik Sjostrom, who havn't saw a lot of action this year, will take place on the fourth line with Chris Simon and Parise, while defenseman Alexei Semenov, acquired via waivers, will be send with the Marlies in the American Hockey League.
To see all the new acquistion in person, Leafs fan will have to wait until sunday's game, when the Boston Bruins will visit the Maple Leafs at the Air Canada Center.

Toronto Will be a busy Organization on Entry Draft Day
Dave Schneizer, TSN Staff
13/06/07 The Stanley Cup winner wasn't even announce yet when the Maple Leafs general manager Mathieu Joyal had pulled the thrigger on a deal shipping center Jason Williams and two 3rd round pick in the upcoming draft for Tampa Bay 1st and 2nd round pick.
'' We just saw the opportunity to upgrade our position in the first few rounds'' said Joyal at the press conference. With Spezza, Plekanec and the arrival of young phenom Paul Stastny, freshly unloaded from the University of Denver, there was no place in the lineup for Williams: '' He would of played 4th line minutes, with no Power Play time all season. It would of been unfair for a young man who have shown he could pay top-9 minutes at the NHL level.''
Joyal also talked about winning for the second time in three years the draft lottery: '' It is very pleasant to receive such unnexpected gifts. We stole Sidney Crosby in 2005, which was a tremendous boost for our franchise. Moving up from the 7th position to the 3rd position enable us to get an even better prospects than expected. I believe in Trent and my scouts, so that's why I pulled the thrigger on this on.''
The EHSL entry draft will be held the 23rd and 24th of June in Columbus, Ohio.

Maple Leafs Top 20 Prospect: 2007-08 Edition
Dave Schneizer, TSN Staff
02/04/08 Another year, another deception for any Maple Leafs fan. Even though the Leafs managed to collect 32 wins in 2007, a franchise record, they still managed to finish far away from a playoff spot, at the 12th spot in the East.
With these results, the Leafs were awarded the 7th spot in this year entry draft. However, this was before the lottery draft, as for the 2nd time in 3 years, the blueshirts won the lottery and were able to move 4 spot up, selecting 3rd instead of 7th. This enable them to select a young talent from the Ontario Hockey League: right winger Patrick Kane.
Five foot nine Patrick Kane is born in Buffalo, Connecticut. He played all his minor hockey in the United States, most notably playing for the United States Development Program at 16 and 17 years old. Last year, he decided to accept the London Knights offer to play for them. In 58 games, the young phenom notched 62 goals and assisted 83 passes for a grand total of 145 points. Moreover, with his brilliant play at the World Junior Cup, he established himself as one of the best prospect in this year draft. Looking to trade up to select him, the Toronto Maple Leafs were fortunate enough to select him at their own spot, 3rd overall.
Again this year, the Maple Leafs can count on a plethora of of young and talented prospect, starting at the center position, where Niklas Backstrom is still considered one of the best prospect in the world. Paul Stastny, son of former NHL star Peter Stastny, will play an important role in this year Leafs squad. Jiri Hudler is playing bottom line, but constant minutes with the Leafs while Dave Bolland will mostly play all year with the Marlies. At the left side, David Booth is playing great hockey so far and his playing 4th line minute with the Blue Shirts. Tomas Fleischmann is still struggling to find a spot at the ESHL level and will probably spend the year in the minor while Oskar Osala and Simon Hjalmarsson are plating great hockey in Europe. At the other side Patrick Kane is leading the pack, but he’s accompany with great, talented players such as Chris Stewart and 2007 draftees Max Pacioretty and Oscar Moller.
The Maple Leafs didn't selected any defenseman, nor goaltender in this year draft, but still managed to acquired defenseman Alexandre Picard and goaltenders Jean-Philippe Levasseur and Joel Gistedt through waivers. Nonetheless, prospects as Cody Franson and Kris Russell have well evolved in the past year and are still considered as prospects with a lot of potential.
Patrick Kane is the only player from the 2007 entry draft to make his debut in the top-10, sitting at number 3. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4 FEBRUARY 2008
